There are many different consoles or platforms on which you can play games. From Playstation, Nintendo Switch, to Xbox, and PC, you name it. When it comes to playing games, players have different tastes and preferences.

Although the choice is vast, this does not mean that you’ll be able to play every game together with your friends who don’t have the same console as you. Fortunately, Rocket League is an exception.

Rocket League is one of those games that is more fun when you play it with friends. Fortunately, the game supports multi-platform gaming, which means you can play with friends regardless of the console.

How to share the gaming experience with friends and how to play Rocket League on multiple platforms?

What is Rocket League cross-platform?

Rocket League cross-platform means you can play Rocket League with your friends no matter the platform you and your friends have. You just have to enable a cross-platform option.

Cross-platform gameplay or crossplay is the ability for a game to be played online with players from any other console. This means that even if you play a specific game on PS4/PS5, you can play with your friends on PC or even Xbox.

It can also refer to saving your game progress on one platform and then playing on a different platform.

How to play with a friend that is on a different platform?

On Epic Games Store, PlayStation, Nintendo Switch, Xbox, and Steam, players can randomly matchmake with or against each other in all Online Match types.

Cross-play is enabled by default. If you have to re-enable it, follow these steps:

  1. Launch Rocket League
  2. Select Settings from the Main Menu
  3. Select the Gameplay tab
  4. Check the Cross-Platform Playbox

For more info, check out: Cross-Platform Support Now Live in Rocket League.

You can also play with friends on different platforms in Private Matches. For creating a private lobby for you and your friends, follow the instructions:

  1. Select Play on the Main Menu
  2. Choose Private Match
  3. Choose whether you want to join a lobby or create one
  4. Your friends also have to enable cross-platform play to join in your lobby

Here is how you link your Rocket League account to your Epic Games account:

  1. Go to rocketleague.com/activate.
  2. Select Log In (under the Epic Games logo)
  3. Log into your Epic Games account or create one
  4. Enter your Steam, PS4, Nintendo Switch, or Xbox One account details.
  5. Select Next.
  6. Choose your Primary Platform.

If you or your friend want to play Rocket League but don’t have a console that supports the game (Playstation 4, the Xbox One, or the Nintendo Switch) and you don’t want to spend extra money on it, you can also play on a PC.

Before you dive in and dedicate yourself to this game, here are some basic requirements for Rocket League on a PC:

  • Windows 7 (64 bit) or newer (64 bit) Windows OS
  • 2.5 GHz Dual-core processor (required) or 3.0+ GHz Quad-core (recommended)
  • 4 GB RAM (required) or 8 GB (recommended)
  • NVIDIA GeForce 760 or AMD Radeon R7 270X
  • DirectX: Version 11
  • Broadband Internet connection
  • 20 GB available space

Rocket League cross-platform limitations

If you start playing the game on PC using an Epic Games account, you will not be able to link the account and the game progression to your Playstation or Xbox account.

To trade or send items to your friends, you both must be on the same platform.

If you play with friends on another platform, you won’t be able to use voice chat or send typed messages to each other. Still, there is a solution to this – Discord, a free voice, video, and text chat app used by players across online games.

Before you start playing Rocket League

Rocket League came out in 2015 and was created by Psyonix, a video game developer company. Rocket League is actually a sequel, a revamped version of another game called Supersonic Acrobatic Rocket-Powered Battle-Cars. It is one of the most impressive competitive video games of the past ten years. Plus, it is finally free to play on the Epic Games platform.

Over the last few years, over 40 million players have downloaded the game. The game tripled or even quadrupled its active player base during December 2020, when it had 65,765 active players.

What is the simplest way to describe Rocket League in a way that really gets at the heart of what this game is about?

Rocket League is an actual sports video game. It is a high-powered hybrid of an arcade-style soccer game and vehicular mayhem with physics-based competition, where you have to do everything you set out to do. In this game, don’t rely much on luck. Instead, you have to be skilled and know how to play the game and win, of course.

For example, when you try to shoot the ball into the goal, the defender is defending one side of the net. You need to score on the other side of the net while the ball is flying through the air. Then you have to jump into the air, boost upwards, and perfectly and precisely hit the ball in a specific way and specific trajectory and power to hit the goal.

When you have to hit the ball in other games, you just have to hit one button. In Rocket League, you have to hit many buttons that control your car, and if you’re bad at it, you will not pass. One rule for this game: Practice makes perfect.

Amazing gaming experience

If you want to play a game that feels like playing an actual sport, Rocket League is the game for you. It is a challenging yet rewarding and relentlessly enjoyable game to play.

The list of games with the multiplayer option on different platforms is growing. Except for Rocket League, full cross-play is achieved in Fortnite, Dauntless, Fortnite, Ark: Survival Evolved, Sea of Thieves, Call Of Duty: Warzone, and Final Fantasy XIV.

Let’s sum it up! Enabling cross-platform gameplay on Rocket League is quite simple. Just go to the settings, click on the gameplay tab, and check the cross-platform play option! Now you are ready to play Rocket League with your friends on different platforms.

Enjoy the game!

  4. I do like the way you have framed this challenge and it does indeed provide us some fodder for consideration. However, from what precisely I have seen, I just wish as other opinions pile on that folks continue to be on issue and in no way embark upon a tirade of the news du jour. Still, thank you for this fantastic piece and whilst I do not necessarily concur with the idea in totality, I regard the point of view.
